When English Bulldog Eyes Are Smiling

If you follow me on twitter (@sensiblysassy) you probably already know that yesterday when Jon came home he noticed that there was something really wrong with Frank's eye. The eye he JUST had surgery on. So Jon called me at work and told me that he was taking Frank to the vet. Long story short his cherry eye has popped out and he needs to have surgery again this Thursday. I just. Ugh. I don't even know what to say. Just when I thought he was feeling better it gets worse, way worse. No matter how many times Jon re-assures me that there wasn't anything we could do to prevent it, there is a big part of me that feels so guilty. Like I could have done something better, seen a sign that his cherry eye would be popping out again. But if I am realistic about things I know that I could not have prevented any of this, because if I could have I would have.

But still.

I just do. I can't help it. I feel so bad that my little man has to go through being put under and cut open again. So bright and early on Thursday I will be dropping off Frank and I won't see him again until Friday morning. And then we start the re-couping process all over again. Let's hope this time it works!

Happy (Golden) Birthday Jon!

Happy Birthday to my puppy daddy, Jon! Welcome to the 26 club, I can't wait to see what you accomplish this year babe. (Seriously though, how cute is my mountain man?!)

Sassy Sidenote: In Dreams

Last night I had a dream I was part of the Glee cast. I was best friends with Rachel and Puck and Finn totally fought over me. And we did a routine about domestic violence to the new Eminem and Rihanna song-sounds like something the Glee kids would do. Do you think this means I am getting a little too invested in catching up in season one? I think it might.

The best part of this dream?
I could sing!
Oh well it's nice to dream.
What have you had dreams about lately? Come one make me feel less weird for rejoicing in the fact that I was in a high school glee club.

Oh guess what, I have a blog sale going on right now!!

Birthday Shenanigans

I had such a good weekend (I know, I know, it is Thursday and I am just now talking about my weekend sheesh!). It was my dear friend Erin's birthday so the core four (Serina, Carrie, Erin and myself) all gathered in San Francisco to celebrate. Saturday night we went to a great place called Pizza Orgasmica. Delicious pizza and well, this fancy beer tower.
Nothing but the best for our birthday girl. Erin pose with your beer tower!
It was peach beer and it was delicious as well. Afterwards we went to a place called The Bitter End; a name we could only say in a very strong British accent. I don't know why but it just seemed appropriate to say it that way-go ahead say it. See I told you, more fun with the accent.
Here is Erin and Carrie posing at The Bitter End.
Here is Serina and I posing, not as glamorous as Carrie and Erin.
The next day we went to a place called Lime. Lime may just be one of my favorite places. Let me explain, the food is really yummy, they are playing fun dance music and there are bottomless mimosas!
BOTTOMLESS
MIMOSAS!
It was a wonderful way to spend someone else's birthday. Happy Birthday Erin and thank you for letting me steal a lot of your photos :)

Are You Wearing Purple?

Today many people are wearing purple in order to show support for the teens that recently took their lives due to anti-LGBT bullying. I know in the grand scheme of things wearing purple won't make these bullies stop or bring back their tormented victims. But it is something. It is bringing awareness to the fever pitch of bullying that we have witnessed lately.

Bullying has been around probably since kids started interacting with each other. I was bullied. In elementary school one girl would come get me every lunch and make me open my lunchbox so she could pillage the little plastic box. In middle school I had another girl that reliably took my lunch money. Thankfully, my mom acted quickly when she found out this was happening and the school responded with haste as well. I was lucky. It went on for maybe a month-I can't imagine what it would have been like had it gone on for months or even the whole year. It is a sick feeling when that smug bully comes sauntering up to you and you just know that they are going to make your day a little bit harder.

And now with technology (texts, emails, facebook etc) there is no downtime for these bullied kids. It doesn't end with the school bell. In my case the bullying was about food, not about who I was as a person. They are being bullied for something that they can't/don't want to change about themselves. They were courageous for being open about who they were and instead of being embraced they are being tormented. It makes my stomach turn. The stakes are higher these days and it truly frightens me.

If you are being bullied go ask for help from an adult you trust and if they don't listen keep talking to them until they do. No one deserves to be bullied.

Acne Anger

I don't think I have talked about this all that much here but my skin has been ferociously acne filled these days. Painful acne. You would think that at 26 acne would be a little bump in my rear view mirror. But...no. It is here in full force. I have tried facials, masks, and as of late I have used Proactive. But to no avail. Thankfully makeup is so helpful in camouflaging my little problem, but really folks it is a total Monet situation here (quick, which movie am I referencing?); meaning fine from afar but wowee kind of a car crash up close.

My next step on the road to clear skin is a product called Dermalogica (this is not an advertisement) that I am going to try next. It seems cool, it makes big promises (ones I am hoping they can follow through on) and they even included a cute little "welcome" card.

So please say a prayer to the skin gods for me, cross your fingers, wash your face in my name. I'm feelin a little desperate!

The Whole Enchilada

I do most of the cooking around these parts and I have found that it is really easy to become bored with what I make. It seriously makes me grumpy. So as you know I am on a quest for not only nutritious meals but ones that make me excited to prepare and eat them (with a high degree of nutrition, of course).

Well I found a recipe that I think is the bee's knees and I thought I would share it with you all!
At first I was a little grumpy about this meal because, hulllooo where are the carbs? I love me some bread and I was hesitant about how good enchiladas could be without the tortillas. So I sat down to the dinner table with my pout on but was given a pleasant surprise once I took the first bite! It's delicious friends, delicious I tell you! I also love how this recipe can be turned vegetarian by adding some tofu yuuummmm.

I won't keep you waiting, here is the recipe for the Green Enchiladas from a great blog called Sweet Cheeks. (Let me know if you try it! Also, let me know if you have any recipes to share with me)

What you'll need:
4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
1 large onion
1 can stewed tomatoes
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp chili powder
1 tbsp garlic powder
1/2 t oregano
salt and pepper to taste
fresh cilantro
1 bunch large collard greens- de stemmed
4 green onions
1 package white or mini portabello mushrooms-chopped
1 small can black olives
Avocado or guacamole for topping!

Sauce:
1 16oz can tomato sauce or more (depending on how much sauce you like)
1/2 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp chili powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
salt and pepper

Here is how it works.
It's morning time, get out your personal chef (the crock pot) Put chicken and spices. Do no add cilantro or other vegetables.
Cook on low heat for 6 hours or until fork tender-chicken should fall apart!
When chicken is almost done get out a large pot and wash, remove stems from the collard greens. Steam them for 10-15 min, until thy are tender and bright green! Rinse and cool greens.

Preheat oven to 350.

In a small bowl mix tomato sauce and spices in bowl. Prep a 9 x 13 inch pan by putting a spoonful of sauce on bottom. Shred your chicken and chop your green onions, olives, mushrooms and cilantro. Grab a leaf, dip in sauce, place in pan and fill with chicken and veggie mix. Roll it up and put it seam side down in the pan. Continue until all leaves and chicken is rolled up. (I needed an extra 8x8 pan.) Cover with Foil and bake for about 20min at 350 degrees.

What I Wore: The Owl Dress!

This is one of my favorite dresses. Maybe it is the print, or maybe it is the cut of the dress but whenever I wear this dress I can't help but smile.
Dress: I got it from an adorable boutique called "Therapy" heh.
Shoes...sorry I forgot which shoes I was wearing this day/forgot to take a picture of them

Do you have an outfit that puts a spring in your step?

Apartment Fever

As perfect timing would have it I managed to get a nasty cold the same weekend Mr. Frank was convalescing after his eye surgery. On Saturday Jon had planned to go on a long bike ride with a friend which meant that I was on Frank duty all day. I didn't mind so much because he was on Frank duty at night which entails taking him potty at 3am (his meds make him have to pee more) and Frank couldn't get comfortable because of his cone so they were up most of the night.

So like I said I was cool with watching the little man during the day, he was a trooper. I was feeling pretty crummy so I decided to adopt the advice that mom's of infants get, sleep when the baby sleeps. So whenever Frank felt like sleeping I would follow suit. So that is kinda how we spent the morning. But by the afternoon I was getting stir crazy. Apparently our apartment is small. I hadn't quite realized that until I was unable to leave. huh, how about that.

What's more is that the weather was uncharacteristically warm and gorgeous. I always think it is easier to be home sick for long stretches when the weather is crummy. But nope, it was gorgeous, perfect weather to be out and about but instead I was in and sicky. ugh.

And apparently at some point on Saturday night my car was mildly toilet papered. And since going out to see the TP job was the most novel thing about my weekend I took pictures.
There are two reasons why this TP job is odd:
1. I don't know anyone within the average age of those that TP (12-17), which makes me feel as though it was random.
2. There was only one roll of TP used, I am not sure if it was even a full roll. Was someone taking a stroll with half a roll of toilet paper and then decided my car looked like a good mark?
3. Why did said person randomly have a roll of toilet paper on them? Never mind, I don't want to know

How was your weekend?

Movie Night!

Last night I went to a advanced screening of The Secretariat (I wrote a review for it over here). I got four tickets and took Jon, his sister Taylor and my good friend Chelsea. As I stood in line to get our tickets I hear a cute voice say "Sarah?" and I spin around and notice it is none other than Steph Corwin (Steph have I told you before you have a cute voice?). Steph had brought her sis Caitlyn and her husband Cale. I had met Caitlyn before and in a weird way I had felt as though I had met Cale before, ahh the power of the internets.

So after hugs and squees we all walk up to the ticket office where the following conversation took place:

Me: Hi there, is the Disney rep here?
Him: Yeah
Pause
Me: Are you him?
Him: Nope
Me: Can you tell me where I can find him?
Him: (Silently points his thumb behind him)
I start to turn around to head towards the Disney rep and he stops me and says:
"Do you guys need tickets? cause I can give them to you."

I nodded my head and then just started to giggle because I truly felt like I was in a Bloopers show. Do you ever have moments where you feel like you are being punked?

Sassy Sidenote: She Bangs, She Bangs!*

Today I said goodbye to my hobo sheep and got some swoopy bangs today and I love 'em!
Thanks Serina!

*This post title is in reference to that one Ricky Martin song. If you have no knowledge of said song, this title was probably awkward for you.

Book Worm

One of my New Year's resolutions was to read one book a week this year. Yup, 52 books. Well I might have bit off a little more than I could read or, well, you know what I mean. I am currently on my 28th book, not too shabby but not where I should be. Right now I am reading this book
It's a really fun, addicting, easy to read book. For my next book I want to mix it up a bit. I want to get my learn on, more specifically I would like to read about the history of the United States. So that is where you all come in. Can you give me some book recommendations? Have you read a book about the U.S. that was fascinating? A book about a President that was a page turner? I am open to biographies, historical fiction, or a really well written non-fiction? lemme have it!

U.S. History not your thing? Ok, just let me know what you have read lately that you have enjoyed.
