So can we talk about the opening ceremonies for a second? How exciting right?! I have always loved the Olympics and still do. While I am not sure I totally "got" the opening ceremony this year, I think the take home this year was everything English right? Jon being an equally enthusiastic Olympic lover joined me in celebrating on Friday night. We had planned to make some pizza to eat while watching the opening ceremonies. Nothing special, just your regular ole pizza, but then Jon found a great recipe from GQ and I thought I would share it with you.
When I usually make pizza I just put my toppings on the dough, pop it in the oven and hope for the best. I'll be honest with ya, it left something to be desired. I mean it was still edible but it wasn't delicious. But this recipe (spoiler alert) has you fry the dough first and then broil it! Let me tell you right now, this makes such a difference. The dough is crispy on the outside and chewy on the outside. OH MAH
(Once again, this recipe was originally found in GQ magazine)
Step One:
Let your dough sit out on a flowered counter top for about 20 minutes. (I just used pre-made dough from Trader Joe's-feel free to make your own though....show off)
Step Two:
Turn on your broiler and pull out a cookie sheet and have it somewhere handy. Then take your cast iron skillet and fill it with about an inch of vegetable oil (we used olive oil and it was fine).
Step Three:
Heat the oil up until you can toss a pebble piece of dough into the oil and it fries up in five seconds. You might expect the oil to be bubbling but you don't need to get it that hot, so don't despair if it isn't boiling-that's a good way to get to know your local fire department.
Step Four:
Gently slide the dough round into the oil and flip gently with tongs after 90 seconds. Repeat on the other side.
Step Five:
Once completed place the fried dough round on that cookie sheet I told ya to keep handy.
Step Six:
Top the fried dough with your toppings of choice and place in your oven (under the broiler) for anywhere from 3-5 minutes. We found that three minutes was ideal.
Step Seven:
Oh my gosh just eat it already. You can thank me later!!!
